About Us

Acorn Stair-chair-lifts is a substantial privately owned company, who's headquarters and manufacturing facility is located in the heart of Yorkshire, in Northern England, with a US sales office and distribution facility in Orlando, Florida. Acorn employs over 100 staff worldwide, and its core business is the manufacture and sale of the Acorn Superglide electric stair-chair-lift.

Acorn Stair-chair-lifts was formed by Mr John Jakes in 1992 and the business started by buying, reconditioning and reselling pre-owned stair-chair-lifts, as well as bringing in new stair-chair-lifts from other UK manufacturers. Within a very short space of time, demand outstripped supply and we were forced to explore other supply options to maintain our commitment to exceptional customer service levels.

Design an All New Stair-Chair-Lift

The obvious choice was to begin design and manufacture of our own stair-chair-lift to ensure control over our own supply. From this decision, the Acorn Superglide Stair-Chair-Lift was born, soon to become a market leader, and to this day remaining at the forefront of stair-chair-lift technology.

When designing the new stair-chair-lift, we consciously focussed on simplicity, ease of installation and maintenance, and ultimately 'designed out' many of the difficulties we had experienced with stair-chair-lifts of other manufacture.

Innovative Technology

This stair-chair-lift benefits from contemporary design and the very latest innovation in direct current (DC) power technology. Acorn pioneered DC technology in the stair-chair-lift industry, due to the inherent advantages of safety, smooth power delivery and the ability to operate normally during main power failure. Interestingly, all of our manufacturing competitors have followed our lead and now offer DC product, or have DC powered appliances under development, such are the advantages of this technology.

Of the UK based stair-chair-lift manufacturers, Acorn is the now the largest volume supplier in the direct-to-end-user market, as opposed to supply through local authorities (government grant assisted purchases). Acorn currently manufactures in excess of 5000 new units per annum for the UK domestic market and has many thousands of customers globally.

Easy to Use

• Whisper quiet operation - due to the stair lifts DC power supply.
• Joystick and Infra remote control operation. The lift can be 'sent' or 'called' to wherever it is needed
• 'Soft start' and 'soft stop' technology - there is no jolting or lurching as the stair-chair-lift starts or finishes its journey.
• Swivel seat with locking catch - ensure easy mounting and dismounting from the stair-chair-lift. The stair-chair-lift will not operate unless the seat is in the correct riding position.
• Diagnostic status lights - mounted on one arm of the seat, these show clearly when the stair-chair-lift is in the normal operating position, and also provide invaluable diagnostic information in the unlikely event of a fault with your stair-chair-lift.
• Folding Seat & Footrest - the stairs remain available for use by others, as the stair-chair-lifts seat, arms and footrest fold away when not in use.

Safe to Use

• Designed to meet BS5776-1996. Additional certification granted by TRL EMC.
• Pressure sensitive safety surfaces that prevent the lift from colliding with any obstruction on the stairway. These are located around the footrest, and on the top and bottom of the carriage
• Limit sensors to ensure that the stair-chair-lift always stops in the correct position
• Electronic and mechanical braking systems eliminates the possibility of an uncontrolled descent.

Acorn Superglide Stair-Chair-Lift DC Power Supply System

The Acorn stair-chair-lift is powered by direct current (DC), supplied by rechargeable batteries, which deliver a smooth, ultra-quiet and safe ride quality. The batteries are maintenance free and charged by a safe 15 volts AC, which is stepped-down from the domestic mains supply by the transformer.

• The stair-chair-lift remains operative, even if the mains supply is interrupted
• There is no mains voltage to any of the operating parts of the stair-chair-lift
• There are no troublesome trailing mains cables, as with all AC powered lifts
• Allows rapid and simple installation, without mess or disruption
• Delivers smooth and near silent operational characteristics
• 'Soft Start & Stop' means that there is no jolting or lurching as the lift starts or finishes its journey. This adds to the feeling of safety and stability.

Our stair-chair-lift has an impressive array of safety features built in as standard. These include:
